Shocking the system

Published by supersand37 at 6:21 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

When I woke up this morning I had every intention of leaping out of bed, jumping into my clothes, waking up the dog and dragging him out for a run with me in the misty morning sunshine. After the fifth smashing of the snooze button I drug myself up from that dream and barely managed to stumble from the bed and into the shower. But hey! Just getting out of bed burns calories and uses some muscles, right?
It’s September 8, 2008. Football practice starts January 5, 2009. I have approximately 118 days to get my fat butt in football playing shape. You may be thinking, “ho-hum, another boring NFL blog,” but I have a couple of unique differences. First off, I won’t be wearing a jock strap-I have nothing to put in it, but I will be wearing a bra-maybe two. Double-bagging is sometimes a great option for women with bigger…assets. Second, my season does not start until Jaunuary and doesn’t end until July. Third, I will not be getting paid to fling myself at women two or three times my size. No, I am not of the NFL ranks, or an Arena player, I play football as a part of the Independent Women’s Football League (IWFL). Yes, there is a women’s league. Yes, it is nation-wide, and yes, we do wear pads and knock the snot out of each other. And it’s sooooooo fun we do it for free!
My team is the Portland Shockwave and we are going through a year of MAJOR changes. New coaching staff, new media represenation and a whole slew of new players. Our team has been around for seven years and many of the veterans are wounded enough-exuse me, satisifed enough to retire. This year promises to be fun, entertaining and completely chaotic. As for me personally, it will be my eighth season. My mind tells me to play forever, but my body is screaming, “STOP NOW.” So, in the interest of striking a deal between mind and body, I have decided to play this one last year. And in the spirit of many an NFL player, after the end of this season…we’ll see. This blog will be about the trials and tribulations of a woman training, trying-out, and practicing for football. If I survive all that, I’ll blog about the season.
Welcome, and I hope you enjoy the ride.
